To fulfil its sacred objectives, Perkasa should just divorce itself from Umno

COMMENT: After being let down by
Umno leaders time and time again, Bumiputera rights NGO Perkasa should
divorce itself from the Malay party for its forked tongue promises.
Indeed this is necessary for the NGO to live up to its sacred duty of
fighting for the rights of all Bumiputeras of which the Malays are just
one group within that ambit.
The organisation is named not for Malays but for peribumis which means all Bumiputeras anyhow.
Indeed, Perkasa has on many occasions expressed its anger at Malay leaders in Umno for failing to stand up for the Bumiputeras.
Its chief Datuk Ibrahim Ali recently pointed out that Umno, which leads
the BN federal government, has acceded to “less than 15 per cent of its
demands” but listened to and fulfilled the demands of other groups
speaking out for non-Bumiputera races.
“The patience of the Malay people also has a limit, do not push it,”
Ibrahim reportedly warned, according to a news portal, though perhaps he
may have misspoken as Perkasa is an organisation that is supposed to
fight for the Bumiputeras, not just Malays.
In fact, general-secretary Syed Hassan Syed Ali also reportedly warned
that if the government continues to ignore Perkasa’s demands and only
listens to the non-Bumiputeras, then he and other Perkasa members would
quit Umno in droves.
“The government is more interested in listening to demand of groups
representing the interests of other races,” Syed Hassan reportedly
lamented.
But since Perkasa which despite being composed mainly of Umno members
has denied any connection to Umno, this is its chance to really prove it
is not an offshoot or a sponsored arm of the Malay party by making good
its threat and quitting Umno once and for all.
Indeed there are more pressing issues of the Bumiputeras that Perkasa
should fight for now instead of looking at the unfulfilled promises of
the Malay party.
For one, the latest cabinet reshuffle has snubbed the Bumiputeras of
Sabah and Sarawak by not appointing more ministers and deputy ministers
from their elected BN MPs, despite the fact that they contributed more
seats than MIC, MCA and Gerakan put together.
But instead, MIC, MCA and Gerakan were given many cabinet posts. How is
this fair to the Bumiputeras? Perkasa should champion the rights of the
Sabah and Sarawak peribumis.
Indeed in the peninsula and in Sabah and Sarawak, many Peribumis are being deprived of their rights and their ancestral lands.
It is high time for Perkasa to act on this and forget the Malay leaders who have abandoned them.
